AYURVEDA AND OBESITY
In Ayurveda, Ati Sthaulya (Obesity) is described as excessive accumulation of Meda (fat/adipose tissue) and Mamsa (flesh/muscle tissue) leading to flabbiness of hips, abdomen, and breast. It is considered as one of Santarpanottha Vikaras (disease due to consumption of excessive calories) in Ayurveda. Medo Dushti (disorders of fat metabolism) may be one of the risk factors for Ischemic Heart Disease (IHD).
Symptoms
Breathlessness even on little exertion / physical activity.
1)Lack of interest in doing work.
2)Profuse sweating with foul body odor.
3)Excessive hunger.
4)Feeling of tiredness.
5)Excessive sleep
LINE OF TREATMENT :-
1)Shamana (Palliative) treatment:
2)Langhan (Fasting)
3)Intermittent fasting
4)Ama pachan (oral use of digestives to augment the fat metabolism) With hingwashtak churna, sitopaladi churna, chitrakadi vati, panchkol churna, etc.
Ruksha Udwartan (Dry medicated powder massage)
1. Triphala powder in obese and skin diseases
2. Nimba, khadir, khadir, guduchi, karanaj powder - skin disease
3. Ushira powder - profuse sweating
Physical exercises, mental work is also recommended.
Samshodhana Chikitsa (Purificatory procedures):
Panchakarma
Vaman (Therapeutic emesis), Virechan (Therapeutic purgation),
Lekhan vasti (Medicated enema) are advised for the management of Sthaulya.
SINGLE DRUGS :-
1. Guduchi/Tinospora cordifolia/ geloy
2 Vidanga / Embelia ribes: Vidanga controls vomiting, nausea, indigestion, and flatulence due to its hot potency. It also helps manage constipation due to its Rechana (laxative) property.
3.Musta/nut grass: Helps to burn fat so helps to reduce fat deposition in obese people. Sunthi/dried ginger: Dry ginger facilitates weight loss by improving digestion, which Helps in burning stored fat and processing glucose in the blood.
4. Amla / gooseberry: Consuming amla juice on a regular basis helps to burn fats.
5.Vaca / Acorus calamus.
6.Daruharidra/tree turmeric
7. Guggulu/Commiphora wightii
